Abstract

The maritime industry is the backbone of global trade, handling approximately 85% of global transportation services. As the industry undergoes digital transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI), it becomes critical that maritime education and training (MET) keep pace. In this research, an exploratory approach was adopted to develop a conceptual framework on AI utilization and implementation in Maritime Education and Training (AI-MET). Eight dimensions of AI-MET under “AI-MET Awareness” and “AI-MET Performance” headings were analysed and evaluated by benchmarking 15 IAMU Member Universities and three AI-Chatbots through a survey. The findings were quantified using an itemized rating scale, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and Non-metric Multi Dimensional Scale (NMDS), and a conceptual roadmap for short-term and medium-term AI-MET implementation was produced.
